It's never too late

Yes, you can start Bharatanatyam as an adult

Many of our students begin in their 30s, 40s and 50s. You don't need childhood training or flexibility. You need a clear path, adult pacing and technique that protects your body. That's what Learn at Home is built for.

From Navatman, New York City’s school for Indian classical dance and music, teaching adults for 20+ years. Cancel anytime.

Maybe you've told yourself one of these.

  • “I'm too old to start.”
  • “I'm not flexible enough.”
  • “My knees or back won't handle it.”
  • “I'll be the only adult in a class full of kids.”
  • “I don't have time for weekly classes.”

None of these has to stop you. Adults learn differently from children: you want to understand why, move at your own pace and build strength first. Our courses do exactly that, privately, at home.

What students say

It's never too late

“I was uncertain whether it is too late to learn a dance form or will I ever be able to perform on stage. But, you assured me it's never too late, and that learning art and dance is possible at any age.”

— Harshada
I'd forgotten how happy it makes me

“I'm picking up dance again because I've forgotten how happy it genuinely makes me. Navatman, your online class library makes it possible for me to learn kathak again!”

— Rashi

Questions

What's the oldest age to start Bharatanatyam?

There isn't one. What changes with age is how you train: more preparation, more patience, and attention to knees and back, which our courses build in.

I'm not flexible. Can I still learn?

Yes. Flexibility develops with practice; it isn't a requirement. Start with the warm-up and conditioning lessons alongside the beginner course.

Can I perform one day?

Many adult students do, in Navatman showcases and community events. Start with the foundations; performance comes later if you want it.

What do I need to start?

A clear patch of floor about the size of a yoga mat, comfortable clothes you can move in, and a laptop, tablet or phone. No ankle bells, costume or prior training needed.

Do I need a credit card for the free trial?

Yes, checkout asks for a card so your plan can continue after 14 days. You won't be charged during the trial, and you can cancel anytime from your account.
